Our Founder and Managing Director, Alex O’Mara BA/LLB MALP GAICD brings more than two decades of deep expertise in complex and high-profile strategy, policy reform, sustainability, leadership, engagement and place-based approaches.

Our advisory services span an array of critical areas, including strategy, policy, sustainability and ESG, place-based solutions, leadership, and stakeholder engagement and much more.

Alex O’Mara — Founder & Director

Sustainable Solutions was founded by Alex O’Mara, a curiosity-driven Senior Executive, Board Director, and Advisor. With over two decades of experience in leading complex and high-profile strategy and policy reform, sustainable development and placemaking, Alex’s expertise spans diverse sectors, including land use planning, natural resource management, sustainability, environment, safety, culture, precincts, building, infrastructure and energy.

We work with senior leaders and teams to grow organisational and personal capability. Empowering emerging leaders is a key focus for us. Alex is a certified organisational coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership. Alex works as an executive coach and mentor with senior executives and emerging leaders. Alex is passionate about diversity and inclusion, teaching masterclasses for women in leadership. We provide advice on organisational transformation and culture to deliver on your strategic objectives.

Our approach to strategic workshops, leadership workshops and impactful forums is to empower teams, inspire purpose and enable collaboration. Our thought leadership and public speaking on sustainability, purpose, place and leadership is focused on sharing learnings and insights to create opportunities for collective impact.

Our people-centred approach engagement is built on relationships and connection. We provide advice on strategic stakeholder engagement or support you in effective engagement by chairing or convening stakeholder engagement forums to enable genuine listening, shared solutions and a resilient future.

WHY THE SEAHORSE?

The seahorse is a symbol of the natural world's marvels and of deeper principles that can guide action. White’s Seahorse, native to Sydney Harbour where we operate, is now at risk, endangered due to loss of natural habitat from population pressure. We understand that they are also precious to First Nations people and that respecting and learning from First Nations people and culture about how to care for our land, waters and the life within them can help to create a nature positive and resilient future..

Their presence and well-being offer a strong metaphor for sustainability and the need for balance. Seahorses also often engage in rituals like greeting dances each morning and have long-term partnerships, offering a form of protective leadership. They are unique in their reproductive roles, with male seahorses carrying and birthing their young. For us, this also points to the importance of nurturing relationships, equity, reciprocity, and connection.

For us, the seahorse represents the impetus to value what is precious and to embrace our agency to shape a positive future.
